Cancer Research and Prevention Grants Awarded

May 25, 2010

It has been less than three years since voters overwhelmingly endorsed the goal of eradicating cancer in our lifetime.  With this first round of grants, we move closer to making Texas the major cancer research center of the United States.

UT Southwestern Medical Center will be key to that effort with these new research projects and the selection of Dr. Kittler as the first Scholar in Cancer Research.

I'm especially pleased that UT Southwestern was awarded grants for program to screen North Texas residents for breast and colon cancer.  Early detection saves lives.

The work that will be done here in the coming months has great potential for reducing the human and economic impact of cancer.  Every dollar invested in medical research has a $16 return in medical cost savings.  This money is a good investment.
