AUSTIN, TX - Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, issued the following statement in response to today's release of an audit showing contracting irregularities at our health and human services agencies. This audit follows recent reports of similar contracting errors within the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) involving the procurement of Children's Health Insurance Program contracts.

"Twice in one week? After an exhaustive Sunset review and major reforms, we are still seeing sloppy contracting that drives up costs and puts services at risk. I am investigating our options to tighten oversight policies," Senator Nelson said. "The Legislature will not accept another systemic breakdown in procurement -- especially at an agency serving our most vulnerable Texans."

Senator Nelson has authored two reform bills over the past two sessions to strengthen oversight of contracting processes. An overview of each bill is attached. Highlights of the Sunset Advisory Commission's findings about contracting issues at HHSC can be found here.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the highest-ranking Republican in the Texas Senate.
