Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has signed on as a joint author of SB 8, the 'Pre-Born Protection and Dignity Act,' banning the sale of fetal tissue from elective abortions and prohibiting partial-birth abortion in state law.

"We have a responsibility to dispose of fetal remains with the dignity they deserve," said Senator Nelson. "Partial birth abortion is a barbaric practice that must be ended to protect innocent life."

SB 8 comes in the wake of a series of videos released last summer showing senior Planned Parenthood executives casually discussing the potential sale of fetal tissue to benefit the organization's bottom line. The legislation is supported by several prominent pro-life organizations, including Texas Right to Life, the Texas Alliance for Life, the Texans for Life Coalition and the Texas Catholic Conference.

Senator Nelson filed 11 bills on the first day of pre-filing. Her primary goal this session is to pass a conservative budget that protects vulnerable children and maintains our commitment to education, transportation and other important priorities. Lawmakers may file legislation through March 10, 2017. The 85th Legislative Session begins on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.
