Senator Nelson was honored with the Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas 2017 Partner In Courage Award during the biennial Partners in Courage Dinner and Awards Ceremony.

"This award has special meaning because it comes from an organization dedicated to providing justice and healing for children who have been abused and neglected," Senator Nelson said. "I wish it were a perfect world, where no one would ever hurt a child. Fortunately, these children have an avenue to recovery at our Children's Advocacy Centers."

The Partner In Courage Award is presented to legislators who have demonstrated courage as an advocate in the fight against child abuse. Senator Nelson has passed multiple pieces of legislation and fought for funding to improve efforts to protect children. In addition to significant funding commitments in the state’s budget aimed directly at protecting Texas children, she has filed a package of bills that includes legislation to protect children from sex offenders. Last year, more than 43,000 children were served through the 70 Children's Advocacy Centers in Texas.

“Each session, Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas celebrates a member of our legislature for helping abused children through outstanding support, dedication, and statewide advocacy. Senator Nelson is the epitome of a champion for children and has a long standing history of supporting children’s advocacy in Texas. We are honored to have the opportunity to present this prestigious award to her this year. It is a privilege to be able to work in support of Texas’ most vulnerable victims of abuse and we are honored to do so in partnership with such passionate and supportive individuals like Senator Nelson,” said Joy Rauls, Children's Advocacy Centers in Texas Executive Director.
